History of the program

It was established in February, 1998. Since that time it has been developed in such regions of Uzbekistan as Tashkent, Ferghana, Samarkand, Bukhara, Karakalpakistan, Surhandarya. Development of the program is realized in 3 leagues – Uzbek, Russian and English.

Aims and Goals The main tasks of the Debate program are to offer students and teachers the opportunity to examine issues affecting their lives, develop critical thinking and involve the youth of Uzbekistan in social activities. The program offers schoolchildren and students, teachers of secondary and high schools of Uzbekistan to take part in debate tournaments and seminars, which will help them to develop critical thinking, possibility of personal self – expression. Students comprehensively study problems, which are vital for them and region they live in, and understand the importance of free and open discussions for creation and preservation of open civil society. Practical support of young people initiatives ensures conditions to increase their involvement in the process of building of an open society and democratic state.

Karl Popper debate program (school league)

It is planned to establish the network of debate centers within the program based on existing debate clubs, provide them with technical equipment and access to information (Internet, e – mail). Regional debate centers will offer opportunities to conduct training workshops in Tashkent as well as in other regions of Uzbekistan. Winners of the regional and national tournaments can participate in the annual Summer debate camp, arranged by the OSI – Uzbekistan and international summer debate camps, organized by the OSI – New York.

Parliamentary debates (students’ league)

It is planned to arrange training workshops, tournaments and Olympiads on parliamentary debates .The winner of the National Olympiad can participate in the International Debate Olympiad.

“Small grants for the youth initiatives support“

Practical support for the youth initiatives in social, cultural and ecological spheres ($100  - $1000). The duration of the project should not exceed 3 months. Applicants should provide the following:
